Everything you need to know about spring allergies in children

alergias primaverales niños

With the arrival of good weather, spring allergies in children also appear. Pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds spreads through the air and can trigger allergic reactions in young children.

Today, we want to explain the most common symptoms, how to prevent them, and what to do to alleviate their effects.

Common symptoms of spring allergies

Seasonal allergic rhinitis can present with various symptoms. Some of the most common are:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Repetitive sneezing
  • Watery, itchy eyes
  • Itchy nose, throat, and ears
  • Persistent dry cough
  • Skin rashes in some cases
  • Difficulty breathing or feeling fatigued due to a stuffy nose

Our first recommendation is that if you notice these symptoms are intense or appear every year at the same time, consult with your pediatrician or allergist.

Can spring allergies in children be prevented?

At Menagar, one of the best daycare centers in Madrid, we love going out to the yard to enjoy the fresh air. Although we cannot eliminate pollen from the environment, we can reduce the children’s exposure and minimize their discomfort. At home, you can also follow these simple tips:

  • Ventilate the house early in the morning or at night: There is less pollen in the air at those times. Keep windows closed the rest of the day.
  • Protect children with sunglasses and a cap: This helps prevent pollen from coming into contact with their eyes and hair.
  • Shower and change clothes upon returning home: The goal is to remove any pollen that may have accumulated on their body and clothes.
  • Wash bedding frequently: If possible, avoid hanging clothes to dry outside.
  • Use an air purifier: You can use it throughout the house, but especially in the room where your child sleeps.
  • Do nasal washes: Use saline solution to clean the airways of younger children.

How to alleviate the symptoms of these allergies

It’s important that if symptoms persist despite following the tips above and worsen outdoors, you consider some of these solutions:

  • Antihistamines: They help reduce the allergic reaction but should only be taken under medical prescription.
  • Nasal corticosteroids: These reduce inflammation in the airways.

Of course, nasal washes are key to removing accumulated allergens. Did you know that fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants strengthen the immune system? Therefore, following a healthy diet and staying hydrated are also essential.

Spring allergies in children can be uncomfortable, but with small changes in daily life and proper treatment, little ones can enjoy this beautiful time of year without discomfort. Minimize their exposure to pollen, monitor their symptoms, and consult with a specialist if they persist. And, of course, count on our support at school.
